FRIDAY 3RD MAY IS OFFICIALLY “FAKE TAN FRIDAY”, WITH 52 PERCENT OF BRITS SET TO SLAP ON THE BRONZING CREAM AND FINALLY GET THEIR LEGS OUT FOR THE SUMMER

Tanya Louise

As I type this it's raining, and the weather forecast for the weekend looks iffy at best, but over half of hardy Brits are determined to get their shorts on this Bank Holiday weekend.

However, those planning to slap on the self-tan should proceed with caution, as over a third (35 percent) have fallen victim to a major fake tan fail.

I know I look better with a tan, healthier. But for a number of reasons I don't do it as often as I used to.

Did you know that our skin is the largest organ on our body? (forget what fellas might say) So you've got to stop and think about what it is you're rubbing all over it.

You can't beat the look of an all over fake tan done professionally, it's when it goes wrong at home that's the problem.

“Tanners’ elbow”, when someone ends up with orange elbows and knees, was named as the worst tanning mistake, with 27 percent of the vote.

Following close behind in the list of fake tan faux-pas was a patchy tan (26 percent) tangerine hands and fingers (26 percent), and stained bed sheets (21 percent).

And according to the 2,000 men and women polled, Donald Trump is the public figure with the WORST tan, with a resounding 49 percent of the vote.

Glamour model and reality TV star Katie Price came in second place (34 percent), while Simon Cowell (23 percent) and TOWIE’s, Gemma Collins (20 percent) also feature in the list.

Also to make the list were Jodie Marsh (14 percent), Jessie Wallace (14 percent), and Baywatch star David Hasselhoff (13 percent).

Marks on your clothing (21 percent) and orange feet (20 percent) also emerged as common bronzing bloopers.

While 16 percent agree that a tan which starts to run when someone sweats is also a major fake tan disaster.

Brits also cringe if your neck ends up being paler than your face (15 percent) or fake tan gathers under acrylic nails (14 percent).

TV presenter Claudia Winkleman (11 percent) also made the list of worst tanned celebs, with the self-confessed tan addict famously arriving at the GQ Awards having had a disaster.

However, this long weekend is the perfect opportunity to wave goodbye to pasty pins as almost half (48 percent) of modern Brits agree a three-day weekend is the best time to feel bronzed.

Harriet Scott from survey specialists, GingerComms, which conducted the research said: “Our research indicates that this Bank Holiday weekend is the perfect time to whip out the fake tan for the first time this year. However, it’s best to proceed with caution to avoid those pesky fake tan fails, especially if you don’t want to end up looking like one of the unlucky celebs who ended up on the list of worst tans ever.”
