Home: How to Organise Your Storage Unit so Your Future Self Will Thank You

Whether you live in a small town or a big city, self storage units can make your life a whole lot easier and more organised.

Get the Netflix series 'You' out of your mind because storage units are handy for a whole lot more. This is true even if you are the type of person to just throw things in a box and stuff them into the unit. Storage units allow you to free up space around the home or office in a bit of an “out of sight, out of mind” kind of way. But, there are ways to get the most out of your storage unit. It may seem like a lot of work at the beginning, but doing things the right way. at the start pays off - and the future you will be incredibly thankful.

Assuming you aren’t going to be living in or running a business out of your storage unit, there are many ways in which you can keep it organised for easy access and removal later on. Here are some tips on how to keep things neatly organised in your self storage unit.

Label Everything

It's not just Mrs Hinch who labels. One of the most important things you can do when beginning the organisation process is to label your boxes in big, bold letters. Keeping everything labeled is not only great for keeping things in order, it allows you to stay sane in the process! Grab a big, black marker and go to town on those boxes. If you want to take it a step further, make a list of everything in the unit. This allows you to keep inventory and easily find things when you’re ready. It’s also a great idea if you happen to be one of those people that just really like making lists like me.

Leave the Middle Open

It is really tempting to just want to stuff as many things into your storage unit as possible, but eventually that will come back to haunt you. Instead, consider leaving a small path down the center of the unit open to allow yourself easy access to items on both sides and the back. This also helps you keep things organized by section as well. Consider shelving to give even more ground space and make this path easier to create.

Do You Use This? Bring it up Front

This could seem like a fairly obvious hack, but when you are in the middle of packing the unit and trying to get things done, it can be tempting to just move quickly and put things away willy nilly. Take a few moments at the beginning to think about the items that you are most likely to use most often and store them near the front of your unit where they can be gotten to easily and quickly. Plus this way you won’t have to walk around aimlessly looking for that one candle you absolutely need right now.

Create a Map

This isn’t like a map to find some buried treasure, simply draw up some sections on a piece of paper, separated by quadrants or however you choose to organize, and list what items are in each segment. This will help you keep the Christmas decorations and baby clothes separate.

Organising a self storage unit doesn’t have to be complicated. But it is necessary, and you’ll thank yourself later for taking the time to put things away the right way.
