Lifestyle: How To Save For Life's Big Surprises

For many of us, saving money can be difficult.

There are those gifted few people that seem to put money aside effortlessly. But for everyone else, it’s an uphill struggle. There are, however, lots of ways that you can earn extra cash to save up for the important things in life, such as buying your first home or paying for repairs to your car or for treats such as holidays.

Selling Unwanted Possessions

Are you a hoarder? We all seem to own more than our fair share of items these days. Having wardrobes that are bursting at the seams and drawers that won't shut properly is not uncommon. But having a declutter and selling any unwanted items is an excellent way of raising a bit of extra cash.

Facebook Marketplace can be a great place to list your items for sale. It’s easy to set up, and you’ll find that lots of people will see your listing.

You’ll need to sort through your items and see if any items might be particularly worthwhile selling. Then you’ll want an idea of how much they are worth, , look for other listings that match your item, and see what they are being sold for. You need to be honest about the quality of your product. Make sure you take a great photo of the items too; bad images will put people off.

Taking Out A Loan

You may want to consider taking out a personal loan to buy a home. With deposits being as high as they are, and surveys, and solicitors fees to think of too, you will need quite a lot of money. You will want to check that you are getting the best interest rate that you can get, as this will affect the amount that you will need to repay.

Loans can be taken out for any reason. However, you will need to make sure you can afford the repayments and that you will stick to a payment plan. Defaulting on a loan, no matter how small, will affect your credit rating and may end up costing you more in fines.

Try Your Hand At Writing

Believe me, it's not easy, but if you fancy being a blogger, you may be able to earn a bit of extra cash. You’ll need to put in a lot of hard work by posting regularly, ideally about a particular niche. After a while, hopefully you should be able to build up a following. Once people start coming to your page frequently, you’ll be able to include advertising on your site so that you can earn an income from your blog.

Another revenue stream is affiliate marketing. You will get paid to include links to products within your blog, in return for a cut of any profits gained from clicks made from your page.

Blogging can be an excellent way of earning a passive income from writing about something that you have a genuine interest in.

Freelance Writing

Blogging can take a long time to start earning money from. However, if have a talent and you want to be paid straight away for your writing, why not try your hand at writing content for other people’s websites. You can pick up small writing jobs that can be completed in less than an hour on sites like Freelancer. Usually, you can expect to be paid relatively soon after completing the work, and it can be a very straightforward way of earning a bit of extra cash.

Mechanical Turk

Amazon’s crowdsourced micro job marketplace gets its name from a seventeenth-century automated chess machine. The machine was capable of playing and winning chess games with humans. However, it turned out to be an illusion, as a human chess maverick was hidden inside the machine making all of the moves.

Sometimes machines can’t do the work that we need them to do, and humans have to get involved in sorting out data. When you join Mechanical Turk, you will be able to take on lots of tiny jobs that will include identifying the contents of photos for captchas, transcribing audio, and retrieving data from websites.

The pay is quite small, but then again, so are the jobs. If you can pick up lots of little tasks that take a few minutes each, you may be able to start earning some extra money.

Rent Out Your Spare Bedroom

If you have a room going spare, and you don’t mind having company in your own home, then you may want to think about renting your room out. You could take in a lodger. This will give you an extra income each month.

You could think about using Airbnb to list your spare room. You’ll have to keep the place very clean, and ideally, you’ll have a home near somewhere that attracts lots of visitors.

Shop And Earn

Mystery shopping is a great way of earning money for doing something you do anyway. If you enjoy shopping, there are retail companies out there that are willing to pay for you to report back to them and give them some honest feedback on how their teams are treating their customers.

You will need to pay close attention to a variety of aspects of the store and its staff, such as product displays, as well as the general look, and feel and the service. They will require accurate reports so it is important you read all briefs thoroughly.

.

Online Surveys

It’s not just retailers that want to pay you for your opinions. You can also earn money by completing surveys to help companies with their research areas,

The work is straightforward, and can be done anywhere, and at any time by answering a series of questions online.

Drive For Cash

If you have a car, you could think about offering your services up as an Uber driver. You can pick up fares from close to hand, and drop your customers where they need to be. All of the transactions are digital, so you won’t even need to deal with cash.

The joys of jobs such as these are that you are your own boss and you can set the hours to fit around your other life commitments.
